The Roy Halladay Award was first developed in March of 2025.
The initial concept of the Roy Halladay Award came from Roger Kinney and Ed Henderson, both with long baseball histories in Colorado (see Board of Directors bios for more details), in discussion with Kyle Newman and Matt Schubert of the Denver Post, who oversee the Golden Helmet Award, which has been in existence for over 60 years recognizing Colorado's top high school senior football player.
Roy Halladay has always been recognized as one of the top baseball prospects ever to come out of Colorado. He attended Arvada West High School in the early 1990s. See our story on the About page of this website.
This organization is formally known as the Colorado High School Baseball Player Award Corporation, also known as the Roy Halladay Award. It is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Colorado with a federal IRS classification.
The top high school seniors are nominated by their respective coaches who feel they qualify based on their baseball skills, leadership on and off the field, academic excellence, and a commitment to their local communities through charitable efforts and support of local youth baseball.
The Selection Committee is comprised of an distinguished group of Colorado Baseball Professionals, including current MLB players, former Rockies executives, top coaches, broadcasters, sportswriters, board members, and a member of the Halladay family. Visit the Selection Committee page to meet the full committee.
The Selection Committee compiles all the nominations as the current playoff season wraps up.
The Selection Committee reviews all nominations and selects their top three candidates in order of preference. Each first-place vote receives three points, second place receives two points, and third place receives one point. The points are tabulated to determine the winner.
If there is a tie, the Selection Committee will revisit the top players and vote again on the remaining candidates.
The Board of Directors starts the year with a visit to the Colorado High School Dugout (Coaches) Association to share information on the award from the podium and also distributes a nomination one-sheet to all statewide coaches in their arrival packet.
You can reach out to any of our Board Members for more specific information, or visit our Sponsors page for basic details.
The Roy Halladay Award is a very local, grassroots charitable organization, and every donation, no matter how small, is helpful and appreciated. See our Sponsors page for more detailed information.
The annual luncheon banquet is at the Denver Chophouse & Brewery across from Coors Field on Friday, June 26. Due to space restrictions, attendance requires a minimum donation of $500.
Due to the specific nature of the event and award, the need for additional volunteers is minimal. Any small financial donation is always appreciated, but we also encourage you to continue supporting Colorado baseball at all levels to help develop great ballplayers and even better individuals.
The Roy Halladay Award exists because of the extraordinary generosity of our sponsors and baseball enthusiasts. We are honored by their commitment to Colorado's young athletes.
